Jaro's show results and critiques
Jaro is a living example of the saying "a happy mind compensates missing intelligence". Not that he would be stupid or anything - as a matter a fact I think he is quite clever young dog. It's just that he acts first and thinks afterwards. Or, if allowed to choose himself, passes the thinking part totally. He has obviously decided that as far as he is able to have a good life by just running all over the places with a charming grin on his face, he can let others do the brainwork. However, on the very second he notices me taking on my clicker and a small bowl filled with small pieces of cheese or meatballs to start training him, he changes to a totally different dog. He learns things very quickly and suggests a large amount of his own ideas too while trying to get the click - anything for the food. And what's best, he is not interested in eating only, but is also very easily motivated with for example balls, cut of a rope and sticks. I would even say that he likes to work with me, not only because of the toys or the sweets, but just because of the cooperation itself.
I first met Jaro at the international airport of Prague. I was waiting for him to be a bit shy in the middle of the crowd and strange noises, on the slippery floor and everything, but instead I found him standing firmly on his feet, wondering eagerly everything around him, ready to go where ever we would be going. I have to admit I was surprised. He hasn't changed his attitude a slightest bit. He is very open-minded and brisk young dog, always on the good mood and ready for the action. The only thing that makes him worry even a bit is our vacuum cleaner. He crawls under the bed right away when I take that horrible machine out of the closet. Of course he can't get under the bed as easily as when he was a few months old, so he grumbles very indignantly when coming back to the light again. He might blame us for making the bed lower than it was before. What else could have happened, when at the age of three months he couldn't jump on to the bed and had no difficulties getting under it, but now it's different with both of these movements? Jaro likes to take naps on our bed lying on his back his feet pointing to four different directions, and is always grinning with his charming smile when he wakes. Or notices that somebody else is awake. At first it was a bit confusing when the first thing you saw in the morning was white set of teeth and two large paws, all getting closer of your face with a remarkable speed. Fortunately he understood that we appreciate his greetings so much more if he slows down a bit.
With his huge self-esteem, Jaro has very strict opinions about different things - and he isn't afraid to tell them out aloud. Especially people playing with Jusa and ignoring him make him really upset. And so do the sticks that are not thrown fast enough. When he is told to stop barking, he often starts to roll his eyes and continues his protesting with growls, howling, whining and so on. He is probably more talented in making different noises than most of the basenjis!
With Jaro, it's impossible to have a boring life. Thank you Denisa, he is really a treasure.
